My occasional forays into lecturing in universities and beyond

It is one of my greatest thrills to be able to pass on the knowledge and skills I have acquired over my years and learned from the unusual journeys I’ve made. I love getting to communicate my ideas and stories and help inspire the next generation. My work wouldn’t be complete if this wasn’t happening alongside my musically creative work.

My journey started while working at Cecil Sharp house for the English Folk Dance and Song Society running their outreach and education program in 2015. From there I entered into mainstream education as a singing tutor at Newcastle University on their Trad Music degree. I even found myself becoming the first ever folk singer to teach at the Royal College of Music after all previous attempts by Cecil Sharp and Vaughn Williams were rejected. Possibly one of my life’s greatest honours (especially as one of my students was a very young Jacob Collier) I’ve since gone on to become a regular lecturer on the Pop Music degree at Goldsmiths University. In the last several years I have lectured at Oxford University at St Johns College, in the anthropology department as well as the same departments at SOAS University and Kings College London. Ive also been a visiting lecturer at many other institutions and gatherings internationally.

In 2021 I developed a residential program called Song Dreaming with my collaborator Chris Salisbury of WildWise in Devon. We created a week long residency focused on a program of working with song exploration and nature connection practice.
