Three of the UK’s most innovative folk artists reinvent a collection of British Broadsides – low cost daily song sheets sold for pence – giving a rare insight into Britain’s music, literary and political history. Delving into the collection of Broadsides at the Bodleian Libraries and beyond, Sam Lee, Lisa Knapp and Nathaniel Mann lead a five-piece band, and bring to life Broadside Ballads for a new generation.

All three artists challenge the preconceptions of what ‘traditional folk’ should sound like. Sam Lee (Mercury nominated) has blazed a dizzying trail as a song collector and singer, well-loved for his rich, resonant voice. Sublime singer and fiddle player Lisa Knapp has established and evolved her own crafted sound and songwriting skill. Whilst sound adventurer Nathaniel Mann is well known for his work in Dead Rat Orchestra, and his performances involving instrument making, ethnography, folklore and storytelling.

Folk musician Sam Lee and friends will perform in the beautiful surroundings of Battersea Arts Centre's Council Chamber together with a live-streamed soundtrack from one of Britain's rarest birds - the nightingale - directly from a secret woodland location near Lewes, Sussex.

This unique experience brings together the famously-beautiful singing of the birds from the wilds of Sussex and some very special human musicians. A technician in the woods will seek out the finest voiced nightingales and transmit a high fidelity live performance directly into the venue to which Sam and special guest musicians will improvise.

Since bursting on to the folk scene, Londoner Sam Lee has blazed a dizzying trail as a singer, nature lover, song collector and folk music impresario. With a rich and resonant voice, Sam is also the founder and dying force behind the eclectic, award-winning folk club The Nest Collective. Sam's debut album, Ground of its Own was nominated for the 2012 Mercury Music Prize. His second album, The Fade in Time (2015) has been equally feted.

Literally meaning ‘wind-eye’, ‘Vindauga’ is the Old Norse word that the word ‘window’ comes from.

The concept of a window perfectly describes this meeting of musical minds from England, Scotland and Norway. A window opens for two-way traffic between what is outside and what is inside. It symbolises openness, with a strong sense of identity, and is highly applicable to traditional music in the modern society. Vindauga / Wind-Eye throws open new windows to these musicians’ cultural and musical backgrounds, with the wind blowing in a strong element of fearless experimentation.

Vocalists Sam Lee and Unni Løvlid, and four top instrumentalists explore the intersections, both ancient and modern, between Norwegian, Scottish and English traditional music. It brings together virtuosity and expressive energy in a concert that never ceases to surprise and inspire. A preliminary version premiered to much acclaim at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections in 2016 and has grown out of Fiona Talkington’s Folk Conexions collaborations with Riksscenen, the Norwegian National Folk Music Stage

One of the most influential groups to have come out of Scotland, The Incredible String Band entranced and inspired listeners in the late 1960s and early 1970s with their pioneering psychedelia, witty lyrics and soaring melodies.

For this very special concert, paying homage to the group, former Incredible String Band manager and producer Joe Boyd invites guests, including Sam Lee, to perform songs alongside collaborators from the group’s original recordings, including founder member Mike Heron and legendary bassist Danny Thompson.

The group’s visionary, dream-like songs injected homespun British folk with whimsy and surrealism, inspiring a huge following of devoted fans including John Peel, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Duo Mike Heron and Robin Williamson, joined by special guest collaborators, gave sold-out shows worldwide, from London’s Royal Albert Hall to New York’s Lincoln Center, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw to San Francisco’s Fillmore, before the original band finally split in 1974.

Each year, for a few months from mid-April, a few thousand nightingales fly to the southern UK from Africa. They can be heard in just a small number of special locations, taking up songful residence after dusk. The territorial males serenade loyally each night for no more than six weeks among the blackthorn and forest margins, giving unbelievable privilege to those who know where to go.

In 2014, folk singer, song collector and nature lover Sam Lee began these reverent celebrations of this endangered bird through a BBC Radio 4 documentary. It won huge admiration, became ‘Pick of the Year’, and prompted a live reconnection of Sam’s fund of folk songs with this much admired but little heard songster. As the project grew, invited stars of the classical, world music and jazz communities came to play and by 2016, with BBC Radio 3 broadcasting the experience nightly, it had developed into an annual sell out excursion.

In 2017 the project expanded beyond our original camp in Sussex to include three new sites across southern England, and bring together some of the country’s finest musicians and singers – many returning for another ‘dose’.

This April, join host Sam Lee and guest musicians for music around the campfire, followed by a starlit walk into the woods for a magical duet with the nightingales beneath the night sky.

At a lower ticket price than our usual Singing With Nightingales events, and a shorter running time, although this Festival doesn’t offer you the full, immersive experience of the traditional SWN evenings, what you will get is three performances with different artists, all joined in song with the nightingale. International Dawn Chorus Day is the worldwide celebration of nature’s greatest symphony. All across the world people rise early to enjoy the sound of birdsong, ‘from rattling wrens in Rotherham to crooning cowbirds in the Caribbean’.

The territorial males serenade loyally each night for no more than six weeks among the blackthorn and forest margins, giving unbelievable privilege to those who know where to go.

In this modern age, with biodiversity in decline and habitats being eroded, the nightingale has become representative of all that we have to lose. It is a small, brown, unremarkable-looking bird, but it possesses one of nature’s finest singing voices. The bird winters in Africa but spends April to July mating and nesting in Europe and the Middle East. The numbers visiting England have declined so sharply that it is now on the UK’s Red List of species at the greatest conservation risk.

Join The Nest Collective online from 11pm on 1st May for a spoken-word journey, hosted by Sam Lee, through some of the finest poems and writings celebrating the nightingale, the wonder of birds and the natural world.

Blending songs with stories and folklore, this special concert celebrates our relationship with the trees.

With the roots in the ground and the branches stretching to the skies, trees have provided poetic and spiritual inspiration, connecting heaven to earth and reminders of deep time. Singer-songwriter and folk archivist Sam Lee, together with writer Jon Drori, will lead us through musical forests and orchards, spinning stories and providing a sonically beautiful celebration for Tu B'Shvat, the Jewish New Year for Trees.

On 22nd April, Sam Lee and special guest musicians bring the Singing With Nightingales experience to the enchanting gardens of Master Shipwright’s Palace in London.

This one-of-a-kind event brings you breathtaking human-bird duets in an immersive outdoor theatrical experience.

The night will weave a narrative of song and story concerning the nightingale’s role in folklore, landscape and migration, overshadowed by their current alarming decline. We will then live broadcast the nocturnal courtship song of the nightingales, so you can listen to his time-honoured song and its powerful effect.

This live audio feed of the nightingales’ celebrated aria will culminate in the most unique of concerts as the guest musicians at the venue and online join the birds in a series of remarkable duets.
